However, the problem with simply selling more bikes was that they had such low profit margin that he figured he would have to sell a ton more to earn a sizeable bonus. Try to imagine what he did.
This 22-year-old store manager, with a wife and baby at home (yes, he started early!), analyzed everything in the store and figured out that the highest profit margin items in the store were the funny-looking clothes that most customers were not interested in being seen in!
But he knew that if he could find a way to convey the benefits of wearing the shorts to a large audience, he could really make an impact on the store’s profits, and consequently on his paycheck!

It was then that he stumbled on what he now regards |

He sat down at his typewriter – no, the PC was not around yet – and he typed out a “newsletter” about the benefits of wearing the funny looking clothing. Not knowing any better at the time, he wrote the store’s newsletter in a conversational tone, as if he was simply talking one on one with a customer. This guy also did something that was brilliant – although he didn’t realize at the time just how brilliant it was! He got the mailing lists of the various bike clubs in the area and mailed the newsletter to every bike rider he could get his hands on, including every customer who had ever visited the store.
Let’s fast-forward so I can share some results with you. In 1980, this store sold about $10,000 worth of bicycle clothing. A few years and several newsletters later, the store sold a whopping $100,000 of bicycle clothing!!
That is one humongous increase!!
You can imagine what the manager’s bonus check looked like! He was pleased! Now let’s fast-forward to several years later and follow this marketing guru’s career.
It is the mid-’90s and our boy wonder is now director of operations for a national franchise – but at the CEO’s insistence, he is also in charge of the company’s marketing – including their company newsletter.
Now keenly aware of just how powerful a monthly newsletter is, our marketing guru put every prospective franchise candidate on the company’s mailing list. Franchise candidates began receiving the company’s newsletter, along with their franchise information. You should know the typical sales cycle for a franchise is about six months. However, one franchisee didn’t make a decision to invest for almost one year. During his initial training program, this franchisee was asked why he waited so long. He revealed that he was not initially comfortable with the business and it was only after reading the newsletter, month after month about the success and growth of the company, that he made the decision to invest $150,000! Yes, you heard right!
After reading every month about the various success stories and how the company was opening stores all over the country (some franchisees were opening multiple locations), this new franchisee said, “I wanted to be part of the success!”
